What does a good catio actually cost?

The price of the enclosure is not the same as the price of the project. The gap between those two numbers is where most surprises live.

Four different cost levels

Compact system

A small window enclosure may begin in the hundreds of dollars, but the finished cost depends on the window interface, support, weather closure, and whether installation is DIY or hired.

Premium modular enclosure

Higher-quality modular systems commonly start in the low thousands and can reach several thousand dollars before site work, custom connections, flooring, trim, or professional installation.

Integrated custom catio

Once a project includes carpentry that matches the home, substantial roof/weather work, custom access, finished floors, electrical convenience items, sloped terrain, or high-end detailing, the correct comparison is no longer “what does a kit cost?” It is “what does this small exterior construction project cost?”

Architectural cat space

Large conditioned or highly finished cat spaces can become significant residential projects. At that level, design quality, sequencing, and scope clarity matter more than trying to force the work into a typical catio price range.

What changes the number

  • House access and wall/window work
  • Foundation, deck, or sloped-site conditions
  • Roof and drainage design
  • Material durability and finish level
  • Size and number of cats
  • Cleaning access and human walk-in access
  • Electrical, lighting, heating/cooling, or conditioned space
  • Local labor cost and contractor availability
Better budgeting: price the enclosure, the house connection, the site/weather work, and the installer scope separately. That makes it much easier to see what a quote actually includes.
