Guide
Catio kit vs. custom build: choose based on geometry, not pride.
A good kit is not a compromise when it already solves the enclosure problem. A custom build is not automatically better when the site does not need one.
Choose a premium kit when
- The footprint and height already fit the site
- The house connection can be solved cleanly with available components
- The visual language of powder-coated mesh and cedar works with the property
- The homeowner values predictable components and manufacturer support
- The installer does not need to fabricate a custom structural cage
Choose a custom route when
- The enclosure must integrate tightly with a porch, deck, roof, or architecture
- The site is sloped, irregular, or constrained
- Finish expectations are closer to residential construction than pet equipment
- The project requires substantial custom doors, trim, weather work, or conditioned space
- A standard kit would create awkward leftover gaps or interfaces that still need fabrication
The hybrid route is often strongest
A premium modular enclosure can handle the containment structure while site-built carpentry, floor, roof edge, trim, or tunnel work handles the architectural connection. This can preserve manufacturer-engineered components without making the entire project look modular.
Kindred's role: help decide which route fits before either a contractor begins custom fabrication or a homeowner buys thousands of dollars of components.
